Community organization for social action and development. Integrated Women Development Institute through its field staff activities the local Dalit community by organizing them into small groups to get social justice, equal rights and there by enabling them to come up in life. People are motivated to assemble for meetings to discuss their problems, identify issues to take up a common cause. To overcome the social, economic and educational backwardness, community organisation at the village, awareness building through education have become necessary in order to help the people to find solutions to their problems in rural development. Hence Integrated Women Development Institute has accepted the challenge in 4 district of Tamil Nadu, namely Chennai, Kancheepuram, Tiruvallur and Villupuram districts. In these villages and projects, connecting organizers are placed to have direct contact with villages and local communities play a vital role in fulfilling the objectives of the programmes.

Tamil Nadu Women Development project through the women development programme was implemented during 1997-98, Integrated Women Development Institute could form only 75 Self Help Groups and conduct trainings to them.
Integrated Women Development Institute started to reorganize all the old groups. The old groups were not according to the norms of Self Help Groups. Hence we had to reorganize them by keeping less than 20 members in each group by replacing aged, unmarried and unwilling members. The reorganizing work is completed and new bank account has been opened for these groups.

but groups and were given Rs. 25,000/- each by the District Rural Development Agency.
Two of the Self Help Groups were given
Rs. 1,00,000/- each by TAHDCO, to start self employment programmes. So far 75 Self Help Groups have saved more than Rs. 3,00,000/-. Total number of women in the 75 Self Help Groups are 962. More than 500 women were benefited by the loans availed with the groups. 24 women have started cut piece sales, 47 women have started selling vegetables, 17 of them have started selling flowers. Others have borrowed loans for their children's education; medical and for other necessities.
3. Rashtriya Mahila Kosh, New Delhi
Under this programme, the 40 women belonging to the Self Help Groups who attended the meetings regularly and shown interest in savings were selected and given training on goat rearing. After the training the beneficiaries were given Rs. 2,500/- each to rear goat.
4. Tamil Nadu Agro Industries Corporation Ltd.,
Chennai(food processing unit)
A Food Processing Training Centre at Athupakkam, Gummudipundi block, Tiruvallur Dist. is supported by The Ministry of agriculture, New Delhi to train the women of Self Help Groups in pickle, jam and juice making in hygienic conditions. The products are being sold for good profit in and around Gummudipundi. The women are given Rs. 250/- as stiphend per month.
5. Tamil Nadu Social Welfare Board, Chennai Creche programme:
The Tamil Nadu Social Welfare Board has sponsored two creaches one is at Athupakkam, the other is at Kamatchipuram. 25 children are studying in each centre. The children are well taken care of by the staff of the centre. The children are taught rhymes and number work. Once in a month Doctors from the local primary health centre visit the two centres and give the necessary medical aid required to the children. The mothers of the children are able to go for work without any worrying and their output in their work is high. The children are healthy because of the good food and the regular health checkups.
